They grumbled a little but agreed to take the $1. After a few days, he told them he couldn't afford to pay the $5 but still wanted them to play in the lot, and asked if they would accept $1. They thought he was a little nuts but were thrilled to be paid to do something they did anyway.
One day while they were playing, he told them that he would pay each of them $5 every day they came to play in the lot. The old man, annoyed by all the yelling and commotion, developed a plan to stop the children from using the lot. Every afternoon the neighborhood children played baseball in the lot. You may have heard the story about the old man who had an empty lot next to his house. You may even work towards a long-term reward such as the development of a business or participating in a competition, but the primary motivator is internal. You strive towards a goal for personal satisfaction or accomplishment. Intrinsic motivation, however, is an internal form of motivation. So, extrinsic motivation doesn't always have to be another person, but it is some outside demand, obligation, or reward that requires the achievement of a particular goal. In fact, this example includes two extrinsic motivators: your boss's expectations and the bonus. For example, if your boss sets a deadline on a project and your bonus is tied to the deadline, that is a very clear form of extrinsic motivation. I would do this by means of relating material to what interests the students. I to make their minds grow in curiosity of the subject so continual learning can take place. I would try to teach to my students to the point where the material becomes alive within them. To facilitate material to students "dry" would totally be out of my agenda. But for the others, this is where is the challenge really comes in. Motivating students to become intrinsically motivated is no easy task for teachers. But on the other note, extrinsically motivated students are seldom found to be intrinsically motivated. This could be due to the fact that intrinsically motivated students are also extrinsically motivated. Extrinsically motivated students study for the sake of outside influences such as getting teacher and peer praise, acquiring a good grade or some other type of reinforcement that a teacher or peer might offer.Īnother difference that is worth mentioning is that research shows that intrinsically motivated learns more than extrinsically motivated students. These students find studying enjoyable and learning new ideas as a reward itself. With intrinsic motivation, the student studies subject material for the sake of learning. The main difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is the goals of the students.
